You must test before you use it, at any scale. Raw materials, mined or man-made, are not consistent. Color, strength, particle size and chemistry can change from one bag to the next and from one supplier to another, even when the name on the bag stays the same. Before you use this material in a glaze, slip or clay body of any size, mix a small test batch, fire it on your own clay in your own kiln, and check the results.
FOUNDRY HILL CREAM BALL CLAY
Foundry Hill Cream Ball Clay 10 Pounds
An intermediate-grained ball clay blend offering excellent moisture retention and more plasticity. In plastic bodies, for example, the moisture retention means that items will dry slower and this can lead to a more even drying process.
although mfg. say it can be used alone @ cone 10, this clay is highly plastic and shrinks excessively and feels sticky when used alone. Cream to buff in oxidation (low iron). Can be used w/10% feldspar at cone 5‐6 for a throwing body but recommended to add grog for more tooth. The mine closed in 1989, but a new source is now available.
