A very fine iron oxide for smooth slips and washes. It won't stay yellow in the kiln.
You must test before you use it, at any scale. Raw materials, mined or man-made, are not consistent. Color, strength, particle size and chemistry can change from one bag to the next and from one supplier to another, even when the name on the bag stays the same. Before you use this material in a glaze, slip or clay body of any size, mix a small test batch, fire it on your own clay in your own kiln, and check the results.
What it is
A fine yellow powder. Many people expect a yellow glaze from it, but in the kiln it turns into red iron oxide and gives the same ambers and browns. Potters choose it for its fine grain, which mixes smoothly into slips, washes and engobes. It's also used as a pigment in unfired work like paints and plasters.
Getting started
- Don't use it to make a yellow glaze. For yellow, use a yellow glaze stain.
- Use it wherever you'd use red iron oxide, adding about 10% more to get the same amount of iron.
- Fire a test tile before you use it on finished work.
For glaze formulators
- Hydrated iron oxide, FeO(OH). Loses about 10% of its weight as water in firing and converts to Fe₂O₃.
- 1 part Fe₂O₃ ≈ 1.1 parts yellow iron oxide.
- Very fine particles: disperses easily with little specking.
- Grade: #5060.
Safety
- Low toxicity, but don't breathe the dust. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator (N95 or better) when handling it dry, and clean up with a wet sponge, not a broom.
- It stains skin, clothes and work surfaces.
