The classic pottery blue. Very strong, so a tiny amount goes a long way.

You must test before you use it, at any scale. Raw materials, mined or man-made, are not consistent. Color, strength, particle size and chemistry can change from one bag to the next and from one supplier to another, even when the name on the bag stays the same. Before you use this material in a glaze, slip or clay body of any size, mix a small test batch, fire it on your own clay in your own kiln, and check the results.

What it is

A pinkish-purple powder that fires blue. It's one of the strongest colorants in pottery: half a percent gives a clear medium blue. It's finer than cobalt oxide, so it mixes in evenly with fewer specks.

Getting started

  • Start at 0.5% in a clear or white base glaze: half a gram per 100 grams of dry glaze. Use a scale that reads to 0.1 gram.
  • About 0.25% gives light blue, 0.5 to 1% medium blue, and 2% or more dark navy.
  • Small amounts also deepen blacks and other dark colors.
  • If your recipe uses cobalt oxide, use about 1.5 grams of carbonate for every 1 gram of oxide.

For glaze formulators

  • Cobalt carbonate, CoCO₃. Weaker by weight than cobalt oxide, because part of it leaves as gas during firing.
  • 1 part cobalt oxide ≈ 1.5 parts cobalt carbonate.
  • Base matters: magnesium-rich bases push it toward purple; alkaline and zinc bases give bright blues; iron, manganese or rutile soften it toward gray-blue, teal or black; chrome turns it teal.
  • Acts as a flux at higher amounts.

Safety

  • Cobalt compounds may cause cancer if inhaled and can cause skin allergies. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator (N95 or better) and gloves when handling it dry. Clean up with a wet sponge, not a broom.
  • For mugs, bowls and plates, keep cobalt low in a stable, tested base glaze, and have the finished glaze lab-tested before you sell the work.

This bag's price stays the same at every level, but it still counts toward your full-bag total.
