Many people expect a yellow glaze from it, but in the kiln it turns into red iron oxide and gives the same ambers and browns. Potters choose it for its fine grain, which mixes smoothly into slips, washes and engobes. It's also used as a pigment in unfired work like paints and plasters.

Getting started

Don't use it to make a yellow glaze. For yellow, use a yellow glaze stain.

Use it wherever you'd use red iron oxide, adding about 10% more to get the same amount of iron.

Fire a test tile before you use it on finished work.

For glaze formulators

Hydrated iron oxide, FeO(OH).
