Zinc oxide influences glaze color more than any other element; zinc already combined in a stain will not harm the color, but free zinc oxide in the glaze can destroy it. For calcium, adding the molecular equivalent of CaO as wollastonite often gives better uniformity – subtract the extra silica it adds, or the glaze surface will suffer.
